About the Item

American cast iron and mahogany two-drawer copying press with a turned bulbous cork screw handle, floral decorative pressure plate, flanking fluted decorative side columns, and resting on flanking rectangular plinths with the original eight lions paw feet. T. Jervey Estate, Charleston, SC. Secondary wood consist of white pine. Copying Presses were used for pressing books and manuscripts to keep onion paper and animal skin bindings in place. They were often used in large corporations and law offices as well. Early 19th Century
