About the Item

Modular bookcase with beech wood frame with interchangeable shelves lacquered in different colors production Charlotte Perriand 1960s. N.B. The width, depending on how you place the various bases, may be less than indicated in the measurements. Charlotte Perriand had a long and busy life and can be listed among the founders of contemporary design. After a period of study at the Ecole de l'Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, she had some experience in the field of furniture and interior design, exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne. In 1927 he began a collaboration with Le Corbusier, which lasted continuously until 1937. In the great architect's studio, he and Pierre Jeanneret produced some furniture that has entered design history. He also had assignments in the studio relating to the design of many furnishings for the buildings he designed. In 1930 she undertook a long journey to the Soviet Union, which brought her into contact with the fertile environment of ideas of Russian Constructivism. In was one of the few women to participate in the 4th CIAM in Athens. In 1940, as Germany was invading France, Charlotte embarked for Japan, where she was invited to hold a seminar on new design. There she had the opportunity to make prototypes with a group of students and, subsequently, an important exhibition. After Japan went to war with the United States, she was segregated. Through adventurous vicissitudes, recounted in her autobiography, she managed to survive the catastrophic war and returned to France in 1946, with her new husband and the daughter she had at that time. His professional life resumed with new collaborations. In addition to her relationship with Le Corbusier, with whom she collaborated on projects for the Marseille Housing Unit, she had experiences with the painter Fernand Léger, with Jean Prouvé, with Lúcio Costa and other important architects. Among other things, she was particularly involved in the construction of ski resorts in Haute Savoie. In the latter part of his life, he slowed down his activity but always kept his atelier open. She received multiple honours and several retrospective exhibitions were dedicated to her. She died at the age of 96 in Paris in 1999.
