We are delighted to offer for sale this absolutely exceptional very rare early Victorian Mahogany Astral glazed breakfront Oxford Library bookcase with hand carved Prince of Wales feather detailing Basically this is it, the one, if your looking for the finest bookcase of this type then this is it bar none, I buy and sell antique furniture and have done for years, this is the highest quality with the finest astral glazing I have ever seen and I’ve seen thousands of these bookcases The Astral glazing is ornate, sculptural, the pictures don’t come close to doing it justice, at the top of each door you have hand carved Prince of Wales feather detailing, the cornice is all hand carved, this piece was a custom commission buy one of the greats for someone of serious importance, I just wish I had the history to go with it, what I can say is it came from a very prestigious Library in Oxford We have cleaned waxed and polished the timber from top to bottom, it is approximately 160-180 years and will have a period timber patina, the glass from what I can see is all original however most likely the odd piece has been replaced over the years. I have looked at each piece and there are a few hundred, I can see one tiny crack in one piece which is so small I have left it as it is however it can be replaced should the new owner wish, otherwise it is perfect The cabinet dismantles in to three main pieces, the base, the top and then the cornice trim at the very top Dimensions: Height 237cm base section alone 108cm, top section alone 129cm Width 248.5cm Depth 55cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses Condition: Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
