Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase c. 1770 in Chippendale Design
About the Item
This piece's beautiful form is taken almost directly from Thomas Chippendale's 1753 "Director" of designs, which influenced the style of English furniture for the next 40 years.
Capped by a broken-triangle architectural pediment, the piece is divided into a central full bookcase, and flanked by two recessed half-bookcases. This example's fine proportion, and the restrained-yet-elegant moulding work are testaments to the timeless elegance of Thomas Chippendale's designs.
Notice in the photo illustrations the hallmarks of quality craftsmanship: matching "flame" mahogany panels in the four doors of the lower section, narrowly-spaced dentils with connecting demilune forms on the pediment and cornice, and the fine moulded glazing bars set within the glass panes.
