TOMADO Multi-Color Industrial Standing Shelf, 1960s

About the Item

Colorful and iconic, this Industrial standing bookshelf was produced by the famed Dutch manufacturer TOMADO (short for “Tot Aan de Ontwikkeling van Doe-het-zelf Artikelen”) in the 1950s. The bookshelf features three enameled metal shelves in a classic Mondrian-style palette of yellow, red, and blue—an unmistakable signature of mid-century Dutch design. The frame is constructed from black enameled metal rods with a minimal yet sturdy silhouette, supported by an X-bar across the back for added structural stability. Designed to be practical and lightweight, the entire unit can be disassembled for flat shipping—one of TOMADO’s early innovations for affordable and accessible modern furniture in postwar Europe. This freestanding shelving unit works beautifully as a bookcase, display stand, or kitchen rack. Its sculptural lines, compact footprint, and playful color scheme make it a sought-after piece for collectors of Mid-Century Modern and Industrial European design. In original condition with visible wear consistent with age and use, including scratching, enamel loss, and occasional small dents—all contributing to its authentic patina and charm.
