18th Century French Oak Buffet Cupboard Sideboard

About the Item

A outstanding early 18th century oak buffet sideboard. Armoires like these would be used to hold table- and silverware or present dishes in a pleasing way (that were the word Buffet is derived from). In early 18th century France the Sun king had seduced and slightly enforced the nobility to come and live with him in Versailles to be able to control them. Etiquette and beauty were used to preoccupy them and fine dining certainly payed a important role in this. So specific furniture was designed at the highest standards for this way of live. And here is a fine example of this savoir vivre. The cabinet can be opened up like a jewelry box and a one piece oak top can be sided out to facilitate the decor. Its maker put a great deal of effort in designing an intricate lock system, beautiful walnut drawers and curved cornice. Also the panelling is delicately carved and shows the Louis XIV style at its best. Geometric patterns were derived from classical times and used to enforce symmetry, order and elegance in architecture and art. This buffet was made from one tree of oak combined with walnut and softwood. The hinges are from bronze and the lock is made from forged and cast iron. The upper part can be sided of which is called Deux Corps.
