18th Century Transition Buffet, Chest, Walnut, Plumwood, Germany, circa 1770

About the Item

Antique sideboard, buffet, chest of drawers with attachment South Germany walnut, plum etc. Classicism around 1770 Dimensions: H x W x D: 192 x 125 x 71 cm Description: Three-piece piece of furniture from the Transition period, i.e. the transitional period from Baroque to Classicism. The chest-like base has three large drawers and a tableau pull-out above. This additional work surface makes the piece of furniture also usable as a sideboard. On top of this, receding quite a bit, is the two-piece top. Immediately above the dresser is a wide drawer and above it we see a central door, each flanked by a row of four small drawers, one above the other. The piece of furniture, typical for the Baroque period, is elaborated with many movements. The base frame has multiple curves, the pilasters are rounded. The whole front of the furniture is discreetly concave indented, the head of the furniture is semicircular with a hollowed profile. The fittings and the design of marquetry are already quite in the style of classicism. On the door and drawers we see geometric filling fields in diagonally veneered walnut, set off by a maple thread inlay from the outer area, which is veneered in plum. Corresponding inlays can also be seen on the sides of the piece of furniture. Condition: Restored condition ready for daily use, with a shellac hand polish.
