About the Item

The lush colour and patina of this antique French Louis XVI period credenza buffet enfilade from France circa 1780 enhances the carved details that give this Louis XVI period cherrywood buffet its lasting appeal. One of the most interesting features of this solid cherry antique credenza is the moulding seen on the three cabinet doors. Please notice that the three doors have a symmetrical arrangement of moulding with the left and right cabinet doors facing the centre door where the moulding peaks at the centre into an arch. This sense of symmetry seen on the cabinet doors is repeated by the shaped profile of the apron set between the two front feet. The gentle undulation of the apron perfectly balances the placement of the three cabinet doors and leads directly into the shaped curve of the front left and right foot with their trace of Louis XV influence. Placed beneath the top serving and display surface and above the centre drawer is the drawer (in our photograph the two keys are visible) and its location continues the balance of the overall piece. The rich pattern of the grain of the cherrywood and the warm colour are features of skillful French cabinet making and continue to provide pleasure today. All three cabinet doors are opened by an iron key to reveal an interior shelf that effectively doubles the storage capacity. The steel escutcheon (lock cover plate) on each door remains an essential component as they were used to protect the beautiful timber from the damage inflicted when trying to insert a key in a darkened room. Remember when this piece was created there was only firelight and candlelight available inside a home. The reflective quality of the steel made it easy to see where the key needed to be used. The curved and pierced shape of each escutcheon provides a harmonious complement to the overall appearance of the antique buffet. Even the top of this Louis XVI buffet has a thoughtful detail with each of the front corners cut at an angle to give a sense of softness to the rectangular shape.
