Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Caviuna Hardwood by Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1956

About the Item

Available today, this magnificent Mid-Century Modern credenza is entirely made of Caviuna hardwood and consists of six doors, three storage cabinets, six shelves and four drawers. The sides are curved and the structure rests on four legs. The wood has been refinished and besides the marks of age, the piece is in excellent condition. With this Brazilian Modern piece, Giuseppe Scapinelli highlights one of his favorite wood species, the caviuna of light blond appearance with darker veins that the designer knows how to play to form geometric patterns on the front that offers a contrast giving charm and lightness with the legs designed in curves. This credenza effortlessly flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. The credenza is currently displayed in the gallery with two delicate Joaquim Tenreiro Poltrona Leve and look magnificent. This Mid-Century Modern gem was designed by Giuseppe Scapinelli for a private residence in Sao Paulo in the 1950s. It was executed by Fabrica de Moveis Finos Zullo Sonato, a high-end artisanal manufacturer that produced pieces for him. The manufacture seal is in the back as well as inside a door. About the author Giuseppe Scapinelli was born in 1891 in Modena, Italy, but like many of his Italian fellows, he crossed the ocean and immigrated to Brazil where he started a new life. An accomplished painter, ceramist, and sculptor, he began his career as a furniture designer in the early 1950s. Scapinelli was both a furniture maker and retailer in 1950s-1960s in São Paulo. His futuristic style is easily recognizable because of the curvy lines and soft shapes, inspired by the Italian design of the 1940s, a departure from the mainstream designs of his fellow retailers. His pieces are beautifully crafted in Brazilian traditional wood. He designed and produced many unique pieces for distinctive São Paulo homes. Scapinelli died in 1982. Size: H100, W300, D57 (cm) H39, W118, D22 (inches). .

  • Brazilian Modern Credenza in Hardwood & Brass finish, Jean Gillon, 1960s
    By Jean Gillon
    Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Hardwood with Brass finishes designed by Jean Gillon in the sixties in Brazil is the FIND of the year. The credenza has a rectangular structure made of Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, with two main legs and two support legs on each side. It has five large drawers and four doors with shelves inside. The brass finishes are located in the joints, fringes and keys. There are few reasons why this credenza is one-of-a-kind: First, the high end wood work. This piece was commissioned for a private residence in Sao Paulo and it shows. The joints, the wood carving, the smooth curves in the drawers, even the hidden toothpick support legs are superbly finished. Second, the rosewood is of the finest quality which can be seen in the wood veins, the grain and smoothness of the wood. Lastly, design. This piece has all the components of a true Brazilian Modern piece with straight almost brutalist silhouettes softened with smooth curves (seen in the drawers and edges) that resemble Modernist architecture from Brasilia of the sixties. Owning a Jean Gillon piece like this is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This credenza is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design. The credenza is showcased in our showroom next to Jorge Zalszupin’s bar cart...
