18th Century Swedish Baroque Corner Cabinet

$24,500

About

Castle Quality. This remarkable 18th-century late Baroque chinoiserie corner cabinet, ca 1750 Stockholm, holds a royal quality and dignity for over three centuries, embodying the 18th-century European dream of China with its Chinese motifs made in golden and silver leaf. Although this cabinet has been restored and re-lacquered around 1830, which was a common practice at the time, its quality is outstanding both in terms of craftsmanship and painting.  During the 18th century, a strong admiration for China grew in Europe, the Chinese culture and science were highly regarded and Chinese porcelain and silk became the highest fashion. Those who could afford would certainly acquire Chinese products.  In Sweden, Queen Lovisa Ulrika, consort of King Adolf Fredrik, was responsible for introducing what was called "chinoiserie" in Sweden. She was very interested in everything of Chinese origin and therefore in 1753, on her birthday, she was surprised with an outstanding gift: The Chinese Pavilion, located on the grounds of the Drottningholm Palace park. The pavilion was filled with furniture and objects inspired by China, many of them made in Sweden. When she was taken to see her gift, she was first met by her son, the 7-year-old Crown Prince Gustav (later King Gustav III), dressed as a Chinese mandarin, who handed her the golden key to the pavilion. In a letter to her mother, Queen Sophia Dorothea of Prussia, Queen Lovisa Ulrika wrote: “He brought me to one side of the garden and I was surprised to suddenly be part of a fairy tale, for the King had built a Chinese castle, the most beautiful one can see.” The most amazing thing with this cabinet is, that it probably has royal provenance as there is a small inscription “L.U.R.S” in black ink on the back of the cabinet, which is very likely to be the initials of 'Lovisa Ulrika Regina Svecia'. This could explain why the cabinet is particularly beautiful and manufactured in such high quality in every detail. Who knows if this cabinet was not standing in the Chinese Pavilion, that day in 1753 when the Queen received the key from the 7-year old son King Gustav the III. The thought is breathtaking.
