About the Item

The handsome lines of this antique Dutch painted linen cupboard bombe cabinet circa 1770 have an amazingly sculptural appeal. Oftentimes the most important article of furniture in a prosperous Dutch household this particular piece possesses a number of outstanding features. The base of this antique Dutch cabinet has the famous bombé form that first appeared during the early eighteenth century in France and soon spread across Europe. The expertise required to construct a bombé form meant it was only reserved for wealthy clients of skilled cabinet makers. The upper section has a pair of grand cabinet doors with both an elaborate shape as well as recessed panels whose upper moulding follows the profile of the crown of the cabinet. The grand carving seen at the apex of the crown has a distinctly rococo feel to it as the bold cartouche is entirely asymmetrical in its balance and form. Otherwise the cabinet is symmetrical in its appearance with every element being balanced. When the upper doors are opened there is an enormous storage space with one shelf supporting a pair of slender drawers that pull open and closed. This shelf and drawers are in the lower part of the cabinet while a single shelf is placed higher. Notice that the cabinet doors are secured by a lock and the doors do not have pulls. An impressive cabinet of this size was in the main and public part of a home so it could be admired by guests. But it was also a storage cabinet for fine linens both to dress the home (tablecloths, etc.) as well as the owners (shirts, under garments, scarves, etc.) all being made of fine linen of the whitest color. Because life was relatively dirty the display of clean fine linen was a mark of distinction as it signified a household wealthy enough to employ a multitude of servants. The beautifully faded and painted original finish is complemented by hardware that has been nickel silvered at some point. The reflective quality of the drawer pulls and the escutcheons that protect the timber from iron keys adds a particularly elegant note to this impressive example of eighteenth century Dutch cabinetry.
