Chinese Black Lacquer Side Cabinet, c. 1850

$2,480

About

Perfecting line and proportion, the simple design of this low square corner cabinet celebrates the restraint of classic Chinese furniture forms. Dated to the mid-19th century, the chest is crafted of elmwood and cloaked in layer upon layer of black lacquer. Traces of the original ornate gilt decoration adorns the cabinet front, likely depicting a lively scene of courtly life. Designed for general storage in the Qing-dynasty home, this chest is perfect as a side table or nightstand, filled with a collection of contemporary art books or antique tomes. Additional dimensions: Door opening: 16" W x 18" H Upper shelf: 10.25" H Lower shelf: 15" H.
