Chinese Red Lacquer Wedding Cabinet, circa 1900

About the Item

Crafted in the late 19th century, this striking red lacquer cabinet was likely part of a traditional wedding dowry, bestowed upon the groom by the bride's family filled with fine silks, linens, and other gifts. The tall cabinet has a clean-lined form, designed with straight legs, square corners and minimal embellishments. The cabinet front is cloaked in a bright, cinnabar-red lacquer finish, contrasted by black lacquer sides and a huge, full-moon brass lock plate. The double doors open by two peach-shaped drop pulls, each secured to brass plates etched with abstract dragons and interlocking coins. A storied addition to the modern home, the cabinet offers ample storage with two interior shelves, two drawers, and a hidden lower compartment.
