Contemporary Cellarette, Cabinet, Dry Bar, Mahogany, Customizable, In Stock

About

Part of Richard Haining's Stacked Collection, the carcass of this cabinet or dry bar was made using reclaimed mahogany, sapelle, and other tropical hardwoods with similar grain patterns. The base, shelving, and hardware are all made of steel. The wood was salvaged from a variety of places, including some from a sinker log from the Amazon River, some from an outdoor patio deck from Eastern Long Island NY, and quite a bit was sourced from a handful of local Brooklyn wood shops. The wood's natural coloring shows off warm tones ranging from red and maroon to light and mid brown, with some paler colors interspersed. There is no stain involved, however, due to this woods inherent qualities, the overall appearance and tone will darken over time. As with my vessels, the cabinet has been hand-built, stacked piece by piece, layer by layer, creating a one of a kind pattern which achieves a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and pottery. The completed form's exterior is staggered in depth creating terraced contours which catch shadows and light in a visually pleasing way; while the interior was left smooth highlighting the wood's natural differences. Once complete, the woodwork was finished with multiple hand rubbed layers of a custom varnish which was sealed with a custom beeswax final topcoat. Although the exterior is stepped and staggered, the finish is incredibly inviting to touch, caress, and take in the pleasure of the wood's surface. The metal work has all been blackened and then sealed with beeswax. The steel base has leveling feet. The shelves are in fixed positions and therefore not adjustable. This item is also customizable with respect to the wood choice as well as the overall dimensions.

Additional Options

Custom sizes, wood species, and metals are available upon request. Please note, due to the nature of this process, and the qualities inherent to each piece of wood, each finished base is unique. View Profile
Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
