Shiro Kuramata was born in Tokyo in 1934. In 1953 he graduated in architecture at the Tokyo Politecnic. In 1965 he founded his own studio. As an interior designer he designed furnitures and more than 300 bars and restaurants. He turned to acrylic, glass, aluminium and steel mesh to create light and transparent objects. He joined Ettore Sottsass in the Memphis Group foundation in 1981.
His approach totally revolutionized the post-war Japanese design and gave a new impact to the objects. His collections are permanently installed at the Pompidou center in Paris, the Moma museum in New York, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto.
Memphis is the great cultural phenomenon of the 1980s that revolutionized creative and commercial logics in design. Born from the idea of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers and architects, in Milan, coupled in the years by famous designers from the international scene, Memphis turned upside down all of the existing parameters on living. Ettore Sottsass as the backbone of the group, design gained a new concept and expression through new shapes, materials and patterns, expanding the creative limits of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design. Its influence is still clear in various sectors of production and beyond.
