About the Item

In honour of the opening of his own Maison de couture in 1987, the acclaimed French fashion designer Christian Lacroix hired the latest furniture designers Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti to create the complete bespoke interior of the 18th century pavilion he had found, located on the famous Parisian Faubourg Saint-Honore´. Garouste and Bonetti imagined a fantastical interior paying homage to the reverie that is the universe of Christian Lacroix, set up in only three months. They captured Christian Lacroix’s roots and recurring themes, referencing the influence of the South of France, bullfighting and the bright colors illuminated by the sun. Garouste and Bonetti fashioned a house ornate with wrought iron, coral tinted wood, cut-out wood, terracotta and bronze, giving a true impression of luxury with the use of very simple materials but painted in bright colors and designed in sinuous lines. The Salons looked like a theatre stage: The idea was to showcase women. They became theatre heroes, discovering themselves through the Moucharabieh mirrors, going through three salons of increasing colors, yellow, orange, and pink. Garouste and Bonetti succeeded in creating a Baroque and avant-garde theatrical setting, unique to, and embodying the style of Christian Lacroix. Some materials or inspiration sources were already present in Garouste and Bonetti’s creations before Christian Lacroix’s Salons: The mask, used as early as 1980 for the lighting of the famous Parisian club “Le Privilege” and present in all of their common creations. Nature, irony, excess and showcasing are also part of their personal vocabulary and are always found in the commissioned works which were numerous after working for Lacroix. This “oeuvre d’art totale” known as the only example of its kind during the second part of the 20th century, is a tribute to three brilliant minds who were able to work in unison to create a dream of Baroque design. The Garouste and Bonetti creations for Maison de Haute Couture of Christian Lacroix are revolutionary and contributed to changing the style of their time. A pair cabinets.
