Fine Regency Rosewood & Parcel-Gilt Side Cabinet in the Manner of George Smith
About the Item
An exceptional Regency period rosewood and parcel-gilt side cabinet, the later sienna marble top surmounting a rosewood case fitted with two short drawers showing ebonized mouldings with brass trim and gilt bronze anthemia mounts, overtop a pair of richly figured 'goncalo-alves' panelled cupboard doors accented with brass mouldings fronting a shelved interior. The case flanked on either side by a pair of robust gilded monopodia elements depicting lion heads terminating to paw feet atop a brass strung plinth base.
George Smith (1756-1826) was one of the most influential furniture designers of the English Regency Period (1811-1830) and wrote the definitive text on Regency interior design titled, ‘A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration’. George Smith drew inspiration for many of his design elements from his earlier career as an Egyptologist, incorporating motifs of sphinx’s, griffons, lion’s heads and paws, anthemia, etc.
Goncalo Alves is an exotic timber somewhat resembling rosewood that was used in select pieces of 19th century English furniture.
IMPORTANT NOTE: For all interested U.S. & Overseas clients, we are currently in the process of establishing a means to expedite the process of obtaining the necessary CITES export permit required to ship items constructed of rosewood, mahogany, satinwood and other protected exotic materials - whether in part or in whole, to both United States & overseas clients. That being said, at this point it may take upwards of several weeks or possibly months to obtain the necessary CITES Export permit.

In Japanese culture rats are considered auspicious symbols of fertility & wealth, acorns symbolize prosperity & growth. Signed with characters and a mon on one edge.
