Rococo Italian Bureau-Cabinet, Milan, circa 1760

About the Item

Bureau-cabinet with fold-down writing desk Lombardy, third quarter of the 18th century Walnut with carved decoration and walnut-burl veneer; applied ebonized wood trim and cornice It measures 104 x 60.6 x 22.4 in (264 x 154 x 57 cm) State of conservation: excellent The bureau-cabinet stands on four slender cabriole legs ending in scrolls. The lower part features a full width drawer with a writing surface above it that folds down to reveal a number of smaller drawers. The sides are strongly contoured, while the contours are less accentuated on the front. The lines of the lower part are continued in the sides of the upper section, which is a cabinet with two doors enclosing shelves. The vigorously mixtilinear crown features three applied rococo ornaments. The desk is almost completely veneered in walnut burl with contrasting ebonized wood trim, edge molding, and cornices. The iron keys and locks are original. This is a characteristic piece of Lombard furniture from the 1750s or '60s. However, while this bureau-cabinet falls into the category known as trumò (trumeau) in 18th-century Milan, it does show a number of unusual traits for Lombardy. These may be seen in the choice by the designer, who was clearly receptive to Rococo tastes, to give his work high legs, softly contoured sides, and rococo decorations at the top. The chromatic combination of walnut burl and ebonized wood, which was much in vogue in Lombardy for nearly the entire 18th century, identifies a late-Baroque style for the bureau-cabinet and helps dispel any doubts as to its provenance. The excellent quality of the wood, the discerning arrangement of the veneer, and the elegance of the architectural design of the volumes and contours prompts us to attribute it to a workshop in the city of Milan, which is where the patrons who were most receptive to the spread of the Rococo style lived and where a good portion of high quality furnishings were commissioned and crafted. • Italian Carved Walnut Chairs with Leather Covers, Milan, circa 1750
    Located in Milano, IT
Four carved walnut chairs with leather covers Milan, circa 1750 They measure: 39.37” high, 18.30” to the seat, 21.65” deep x 19.29” (100 cm high, 46.5 cm to the seat, 55 cm deep x 49 cm) State of conservation: - the leather covers are not original; - some signs of use, especially on leather covers; - the rocailles at the height of the backrests have lost part of the carved elements. The four walnut chairs have a mixtilinear structure adorned with rocaille relief carvings; the legs are shaped and end with a curl. The backs and seats are padded and covered with impressed leather with figures and cartouche decorations from later production. Around the mid-eighteenth century in Milan it was very popular to cover seats with impressed leather. Mutton or cowhide was used which, suitably tanned, was then worked with heated irons (hot decoration) or with carved wooden molds (cold decoration). These were impressed on the leather until obtaining a darker brown color. Our group of chairs...

Assortment of bottle and glass coolers in Maiolica. Pasquale Rubati manufacture Milan, circa 1770 Maiolica polychrome decorated “a piccolo fuoco” (third fire) a - Bottle cooler 5.91 in x 5.91 in diameter (15 x 15 cm ) Weight: 1.86 lb (845 g) b - Bottle cooler 6.89 x 7.87 in diameter (17,5 x 20 cm) Weight: 2.09 lb (948 g) c - Pair of glass-cooler vases 3.94 x 3.94 in diameter (10 x 10 cm) Weight: 1.43 lb (650 g) Good state of conservation: a - some chipping from use on the edge; a - two fêlures covered on the edge; c - one has deep chippings on the edge and the other a subtle fêlure. Two Majolica factories were active in Milan in the 18th century. The first, starting from 1745, was owned by Felice Clerici; the other one by Pasquale Rubati from 1756. Rubati was in competition with Felice, whose worker he had been prior to opening his own workshop. On his death in 1796, the business was continued for a few more years by his son Carlo. Recent studies have recognized Pasquale Rubati's contribution as the creator of "Strasbourg-style" decorations with their particularly joyful depictions. This style had previously been attributed to the Lodi manufacturers. These works here, however, are a clear example of this production. The Majolica containers have different sizes, a cylindrical shape and rest on a low foot ring. The two largest are completed by handles in the shape of a zoomorphic mask with wide open jaws, while the smaller ones have handles applied with an anthropomorphic mask. All the works are characterized by elegant floral decoration. The two twin glass coolers show bunches of flowers centered around a main corolla, a rose or a peony paired...
