Superb Burr Walnut and Kingwood Cocktail Cabinet, Mid-20th Century

About the Item

This is a superb large French Louis revival burr walnut and kingwood ormolu-mounted cocktail cabinet, mid-20th century in date. Adding to its truly unique character it has been decorated with a plethora of exquisite gilded ormolu mounts. The canted corners with decorative ormolu mounts frame a pair of beautifully panelled doors each centred with a stunning floral decorated oval ormolu medallion. The doors have mosaic mirror on the inside and open to reveal a stylish fitted mirrored glass interior with a glass shelf. Beneath this there is a pull-out drawer with a fall front that has a mirrored base, Ideal for serving drinks, and a cupboard ideal for storage of bottles. Add a touch of class to a special room in your home with this superb cabinet. Dimensions in cm: Height 145 x width 127 x depth 54 Dimensions in inches: Height 57.1 x width 50.0 x depth 21.3 Ormolu (from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze.The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'. The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object. Burr walnut refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find. Kingwood is a Classic furniture wood, almost exclusively used for inlays on very fine furniture. Occasionally it is used in the solid for small items and turned work, including parts of billiard cues, e.g., those made by John Parris. It is brownish-purple with many fine darker stripes and occasional irregular swirls. Occasionally it contains pale streaks of a similar color to sapwood. The wood is very dense and hard and can be brought to a spectacular finish. it turns well but due to its density and hardness can be difficult to work with hand tools. It also has a tendency to blunt the tools due to its abrasive properties.
