Two "Imperial" Cabinets by Shiro Kuramata

About the Item

The notion of the container and the secrecy that can abound from it was an important preoccupation for the stellar Japanese designer Shiro Kuramata --- perhaps because he grew out of a culture that values space more than most --- because the average person in Japan possesses very little. These two pieces find their privacy by means of tambour doors that "disappear" by way of matching color. The minimalism they implement evokes true Japanese spareness!

George early on thought of it as a medicine cabinet, an apothecary vitrine or just a small bookcase. In my first great apartment on the Detroit River, it was my towel...
