18th Century Swedish Commode, Alder Root
About the Item
A beautiful 18th century Swedish baroque chest of drawers, alder root. This late baroque commode is made around 1740-60. During the 18th and 19th century it became popular to use the root from the alder tree to make furniture in the cities laying next to the big lake Mälaren (lake Malar) There were quite a few small workshops active around Mälaren during the 18th century and the furniture were rarely signed. The alder tree grows near or next to the water. The veneer made out of alder root has a very beautiful color, texture and pattern. This late baroque commode is has its alder root veneered on pine which was a common base.
Mälaren or Lake Malar in English, is the third-largest freshwater lake in Sweden (after Vänern and Vättern). Its area is 1,140 km2 and its greatest depth is 64 m. Mälaren spans 120 kilometers from east to west.
