Josef Frank for Haus & Garten: small chest of drawers on wheels, 1920s

About the Item

Josef Frank designed this delicate chest of drawers in the late 1920s. It was manufactured by Haus & Garten. The original design drawing is housed in the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna. A similar chest of drawers was part of the girl's room in the Villa Beer in Vienna (see illustration in the magazine "Innen-Dekoration – die gesamte Wohnungskunst in Bild und Wort," 1931, Issue 10, p. 393). The chest of drawers has been restored and repainted in its original light yellow color. The drawers are made of cherry wood. All fittings and the casters on the legs are original. The glass top is also original—beneath the glass is a Josef Frank fabric called "Pflastersteine" (Cobblestones), designed in 1927 for Backhausen; this fabric has been replaced. This is a unique, museum-quality piece!
