About the Item

An inordinately fine work of art from the last quarter of the 19th century, this Centennial celebration was executed when passion for the early forms of Americana had fully captured the imagination of the public. Period rooms and precisely handmade renditions of important original forms was the vogue, allowing a piece of this richness and attention to detail to be crafted. Utilizing the finest of materials, the vibrant and richly grained solid mahogany is perfectly cut and finished for best presentation; these kinds of boards were quite scarce even in the day, nearly impossible to find now. The top is noteworthy with a full flame display in the single solid plank. Of interest to the connoisseur of bench made pieces is the absence of any “applied” carvings in the case other than the applied Roman Key molding beneath the top - everything is carved of the solid plank, including the infinite-edge treatment of the top. The very finely rendered raised-relief carved florals of the corner columns are particularly effective, but pale in comparison to the incredible display of skill in the relentlessly undulating apron with its scrolling acanthus and central rocaille carving. All of this is finished in crisp and rather powerful ball and claw feet. Naturally every aspect of the construction is true to the period the piece was intended to honor - crisp hand dovetailing, chamfered bottom boards, tenon mortised drawer blades, etc. No expense was spared in the design and execution of this exquisite chest of drawers.
