American Hepplewhite Chest of Drawers or Bureau in Mahogany, circa 1800
About the Item
A Hepplewhite chest in mahogany with four graduated drawers with inlaid key plates and original pulls depicting cornucopias. Decorative elements include line inlays around drawers, banding along top edge, and an inlaid pinwheel on apron, with cyma curves along front and sides. Chest rests on four splayed feet, circa 1785-1800.

The handsome figuring of the grain is given added movement by the flat cut contiguous veneer moving horizontally across the front of the chest.. The sides also have a flat cut veneer in one piece that was at the intersection of the huge branch or fork in the tree showing the knot and the concentric circles of the grain radiating out from the knot. Chest offers a pedestal top and rests on turned front feet, with diamond-shaped inlaid satinwood key insets. The top and bottom drawers have sculpted fronts.
