The visual contrast between the timbers on this antique English neoclassical mahogany chest of drawers circa 1860 is powerfully distinctive. This Georgian style antique English chest has both the top and the four drawer fronts embellished with a lovely satinwood parquetry design. On the top there is a rectangular border with a bellflower in each of the four corners along with a moulded edge that is slightly wider than the body of the chest. Please notice that the four drawers are graduated in size with the uppermost drawer being the smallest and moving down to the largest drawer just above the base. Be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the details on the hand inlaid parquetry which gives this chest its appeal. Although each drawer features the same design of a bell flower in each corner connected by a stripe around the entire perimetre the cabinet man who placed the inlay took care to expand ther design appropriately to fit the changing scale of each drawer front. All of the edges are beaded on the drawers to add to a sense of framing and the original brass drop pull handles fit the Georgian origin. Even the sides are set with a rectangular band of satinwood. This English chest is elevated upon bracket feet both front and back with the front bracket feet showing a slender stripe of satinwood set into the mahogany giving a slight bit of flair to the feet and including them in the overall appearance. This chest was designed to be seen from all sides with its attention to detail placement and the fine materials used to construct the entire piece.
