The elegant symmetry of this antique French chest speaks to the importance of balanced harmony at the end of the eighteenth century in French interiors. The antique oak chest has three drawers each featuring a central oval shaped medallion that encloses an escutcheon (the metal plate that covers the area where an iron key is inserted to engage the lock) along with a circular pull on the left and right of the escutcheon. The pulls are located within a rectangular area of each drawer that has an inner edge that follows the profile of the oval while the outer corners are geometric in shape. All of these designs are carved from the single piece of oak timber that comprise each drawer front instead of being applied molding as seen in the nineteenth century. The perfect placement of these sections one above the other on each of the three drawers creates a powerful impression when viewed. All three drawers are flanked on the left and right by a series of vertical fluting and the carving is just as precise and defined as seen on the drawers themselves. Even the sides feature recessed panels that give architectural definition to the entire chest of drawers. The chest stands on unusually shaped legs that are square in profile with a tapered shape seen fully in the round on the front two legs while only half a large for the rear legs. The top of the antique French commode is made from a series of oak timber planks fitted together with tongue and groove precision to ensure a flat surface for the display of a collection. The lustrous patina of the finish simply glows with depth and richness and the large scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed.
