About

A handsome English military officer’s Campaign ware chest, circa 1860, featuring a handsome camphor wood exterior with ebony trim.
Showing one long drawer over a pull-out writing desk and flanked by three short drawers, over three long drawers.
The brass-bound chest, in two parts, accented with brass hardware and porter’s handles, resting on shaped feet.
The pull-out writing slope with green felt writing surface, opening to stationery compartments and drawer.

Campaign-era chests and secretaries were the travel items of British military officers who bought and commissioned them for their campaigns abroad to India and Ceylon (The Raj); indeed, the whole of the British Empire. The officers, being predominately from the upper classes, were accustomed to a certain standard of living and found it unthinkable to travel without their necessaries.
