About the Item

Empire Period Neoclassical Chest of Drawers, Germany c.1820, Painted Decoration. This handsome chest features a half column on both the left and right sides that flank the middle and lower drawer and support the top drawer that extends further forward than the lower drawers. The artisan chose to highlight this placement by using a contrasting colour of paint that differs from any seen elsewhere on the chest of drawers. The sophisticated colour palette includes salmon and black as well as the white and features a neoclassical design in the scrolled flourish that encompasses the centre of the middle and lower drawers. Because the upper drawer extends from side to side and is set forward of the lower drawers it is able to be accessed with a key in the centre instead of using the ring pull handles seen elsewhere. This enabled the artisan who painted the chest to extend the design of the decoration across the entire width of the drawer and make it complementary in pattern to the larger central motif. The sides of the chest are quite simply adorned with a bold line that follows exactly the unusual profile of the chest as it moves forward and backward depending upon the location of the drawers. All four legs are tapered on all sides and this particular shape gives the chest its visual lift when viewed from every direction. It is important to note the overall symmetrical design of both the construction and painted decoration as it is superbly balanced and exemplifies the best of late eighteenth century neoclassical ideals that carried forward into the Empire period of the early nineteenth century.
