French 19th-20th century Louis XV Style Gilt Bronze Mounted Marquetry Commode

About the Item

A fine French 19th-20th century Louis XV style gilt bronze-mounted kingwood, amaranth, satinwood and Tulipwood Bois Satiné and Bois de Bout Floral Marquetry Two-Drawer Commode of bombé serpentine form, with a veined Rouge Roayl marble top above two long drawers on cabriole legs terminating in scrolled feet, the whole inlaid with foliate sprays in bois de bout marquetry, with gilt bronze mounts throughout cast with foliage, rocaille and scrolls, in the manner of François Linke's, Index number 1810, Paris. Unsigned and unmarked, Paris, circa 1890-1900. Measures: Height 37 inches (94 cm) Width 63 inches (160 cm) Depth 27 inches (68.6 cm) François Linke (1855-1946): Considered the finest French cabinet maker of the late 19th and early 20th century. By 1875, Linke who was born in Pankraz Bohemia, had arrived in Paris and established an independent workshop. His early works were mainly copies of important eighteenth century models. Linke received major attention at the Paris Exposition Universelle when he presented his totally new style, of Rococo with the addition of the new ‘Art Nouveau’ fluidity. He was awarded the Gold Medal for his extraordinary Grand Bureau. Linke also exhibited at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, Liege in Belgium, and the Franco-British exhibition in London in 1908. His work has long been admired for its exceptional quality and innovative interpretation of the Louis XV and Art Nouveau styles. Stamp: Engraved signature: “F.Linke”, “FL” , “LINKE”.“F.Linke”, “FL” , “LINKE”. Some of Linke's early works were neither signed or stamped.

    Repaired: Some old veneer restorations. Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. A truly beautiful commode in good condition having recently been refinished. All gilt original and fine chasing. Unsigned and unmarked.

    Important French Louis XV Marquetry Gilt-Bronze Commode 'En Tombeau', Stamped "Birckle" (Jacques Bircklé (1734-1803) A Louis XV marquetry and gilt bronze commode 'En Tombeau' or 'tomb-shaped', with two large drawers below two half-width drawers, the whole with bombe´ sides and a serpentine outline, on low feet, with a gilt bronze mounted apron in the centre front. The commode shows excellent cartouche marquetry carcase of oak, the mounts of gilt bronze with superb Louis XV-style c-scroll and rocaille cast mounts to the angles and the apron and finely cast gilt bronze handles of foliate shape. The top is of red marble (Pyre´ne´es orientale). Stamped "J.Birckle" and proably "JME (see photo). Jacques Bircklé, born 1734, received his cabinet makers' master title 1764 and set up shop at first at the rue de Charenton and later at the rue Saint Nicolas and became one of the most famous maitres ebenistes of his time.
