French Neoclassical Bronze and Marble Parquetry Inlaid Commode, circa 1880

About the Item

Of a most fine quality, this commode was crafted during the last quarter of the 19th century during the Bell Epoqué. Distinctly square and severe in angles, the commode is a statement of geometry and competing lines. A repeating squared parquetry veneer throughout the surface is set within rectangular bronze frames, the canted corners of the commode free of parquetry but rich in fine draping floral bronze mounts. The apron drops with a demilune mounted by a large circular foliate rosette and a perfect match for the four original pulls on the drawers. These flank a large keyhole escutcheon on both drawers, the key missing but would operate a very high quality locking mechanism that extends the height of each drawer. Both canted tapering legs enjoy bold acanthus mounts under cove molding, some of these moldings lost at one point and recreated by a craftsman in giltwood. Each foot terminates in a squared sabot. The Carrara marble top is original and in beautiful condition. Joinery throughout is exquisite, as would be expected, the tight hand dovetailing of the drawers creating smooth and sturdy function in the case. A piece of purity and aesthetic mastery, this is a most fine acquisition for anyone passionate about fine design. Measurements: 35 1/4” H x 40” W x 18 1/2” D. Condition report: Old shellac on surface and on discolored bronze mounts. Veneer repairs to surface with some replaced veneers here and there. Some bronze molding above legs replaced with gilded wood. Light scratches to original marble top. No key. We have many additional images available upon request.
