Large French Louis XV Style Commode with Floral Marquetry, circa 1850

About the Item

We are pleased to present you, a very high-quality French mid-19th century Louis XV style in tulipwood and kingwood commode with floral marquetry. Our beautiful chest raised on slender cabriole legs with front wrap around ormolu sabots. Above each leg are impressive and finely chased scrolled ormolu mounts of acanthus leaves. At the scalloped frieze is a central scrolled ormolu mount. Above are two « sans traverse » drawers with ormolu keyhole escutcheons. Each drawer wonderfully decorated with continuous marquetry of foliate, repeated on each curved side panel. Below the Breche d’Alep marble top. Warm and rich patina throughout with all original hardware and gilt. Breche d'Alep marble was extracted in the commune of Tholonet in Bouches-du-Rhône from 1712, then in Beaurecueil in 1735 and in Saint-Antonin in 1756. Against a yellow background, Breche d'Alep marble is made up of large rounded fragments of browns, greys, red or blacks. This Breche d'Alep marble was used a lot during the 18th and 19th century, and also the start of the 20th century, especially for furniture and fireplaces. The Carnavalet museum in Paris conserves a Louis XV chest of drawers in Chinese lacquer, legs from Madame Bouvier, with a shelf made out of Breche d'Alep. A very beautiful antique Regence style fireplace decorates the salon of the Grande Singerie at Château de Chantilly. Fantastic high quality important French commode in the Louis XV style, manufactured in the mid-19th century, circa 1850. Dimensions : H 33.85 in, W 55.51 in, D 23.81 in.
