A superb George III satinwood bow fronted four drawer chest/commode. English. Circa 1790. The commode chest has four long graduated drawers over a shaped apron, on splayed feet. It retains the original brass handles, which is rare. Veneered over solid oak in the finest quarter-sawn satinwood, banded in rosewood and mahogany, with boxwood stringing throughout. It has has been sympathetically re-finished, still retaining some authentic marks to highlight its genuine heritage. To the left hand side near the back there is some slight damage to the banding and a small piece of veneer has been re-glued back on near the escutcheon of the third drawer down. Please refer to the photographs. The drawers are lined in oak with handmade dovetail construction. The drawer sides have had slivers of oak added to make the drawers run better. The underside of the top has neat butterfly construction to the oak join, always a sign of a well made piece. There is no woodworm. Originally a commode occupied a prominent position in a house, not always for bedroom use...
