Bombé Commode, Possibly, Italy, 18th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
"Palo santo" (lignum vitae), rosewood, wood, metal. Chest of drawers with two drawers located in the front decorated on the outside with a simple marquetry composition combining dark and light woods, and handle handles and metal lock shields. On the sides, upper board and front, the plates are placed so that a diamond or diamond is drawn, enhanced by a darker stripe delimited to the interior by a thin light wood; in the drawers the composition is repeated with the difference that there is a merely visual interruption (the drawers are glued together) by leaving a band in darker wood flanked by two smooth moldings on the lower edge of the upper drawer. On the upper board, the ripples present on the chest of three main fronts continue, extending the four corners downwards with more undulations until ending in a cabriolet leg finished off at its lower end by two projections that go down from the waist and one way spherical, ending in a "taco" that slightly elevates the furniture. The decoration carved in light relief is concentrated in a molding located under the drawers and that follows the curves of the area, at the ends of the legs and in the lower part of the piece (drawing lines and plant forms reminiscent of the Rococo of the eighteenth century ), which is cropped and curved. Although the most common in the chest of drawers of the 18th century was the proliferation of bronze appliques, there is a series of European centers in which the most normal thing is the absence of them (the present example only has four handles of plant elements and two lock shields with a symmetrical composition based on leaves and architectural motifs), thus enhancing the wood, its veins and the quality of it. Note also the lack of marble board at the top. The corners, in addition to being rounded (except for the back, which is flat), make some curves inverting the usual sense of those known as "bombé commode" or comfy commodes, common in the 18th century and in the Rococo style, and that continue on the endings in "cabriolet". This abundance and "inversion" of curves can be found in some Italian examples of the eighteenth century, as in some mid-Venetian lacquered furniture...
