French 18th Century Regence Ormolu-Mounted Commode by Etienne Doirat
By Etienne Doirat
Located in PARIS, FR
A Regence ormolu-mounted commode by Etienne Doirat (Paris, 1675-1732)
Rare and elegant commode curved on the front and on the sides, in amaranth veneer arranged in sheets in the frames. It opens with four drawers in three rows: two large and two short and asymmetrical .
Rich ornamentation of chiseled and gilt bronzes: the Rococo frontal cartouche, mounts with oak leaf windings, foliated handles and clogs, rosettes on the sides.
Flanders red marble top.
Size: h. 35.04 inch, w. 56.69 inch, d. 33.46 inch
By Etienne Doirat (1675-25 June 1732), Regency period, 18th century
Although not stamped, our commode belongs by its shape and its bronze ornamentations to an identified corpus of the production of Etienne Doirat, one of the most talented cabinetmakers under the Regency.
This group of chests of drawers listed in public and private collections, some of which stamped E. Doirat are characterized by the almost identical front cartouche.
On our chest of drawers, this cartouche is formed by two scalloped lambrequins joined by a clip they are extended by branches with acanthus foliage and flowers with beaded friezes. Inside are two keyholes, the first with a lion's mouth, the second formed by two stylized dolphins facing each other with lion's paws under a valance.
Chests of drawers by Etienne Doirat with the frontal cartouche:
Commode in identical "tombeau" shape:
- Commode stamped Doirat, Christie's London, July 10, 2008 lot n 43
- Unstamped chest of drawers, doc. Me Tajan, published in "French 18th century Furniture" by Kjelleberg
Commode of different shape, identical front cartouche:
- Chest of drawers with three drawers, stamped Doirat, Christie's London, November 27, 2018 lot n 509
- Sarcophagus chest of drawers, stamped Doirat, J. Paul Getty museum, Los Angeles
- Chest of drawers with two drawers, stamped Doirat, private collection, illustrated in J. - D. Augarde
- Chest of drawers with three drawers, stamped by Migeon, but attributed to Doirat from the former Eugène Kraemer collection, sale at Galerie Georges Petit (Paris), May 5-6, 1913, lot 141; former Ogden Mills collection, Paris, rue de Varenne...

19C French Empire Style Complete Bedroom Set - Outstanding
Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING AN ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING 19C French Empire Style Style Complete Bedroom Suite/Set.
HIGHLY, IMPORTANT AND UNIQUE Empire Style Bedroom Suite or Set, in the Manner of Francois Linke (or similarly important Parisienne maker), from circa 1880.
The Suite/Set is almost completely original, save the bed, which was originally twin size, but professionally commissioned to be customized and converted into a Euro King Size for modern practicality. The quality of the conversion matches the quality of the suite/set.
All pieces have ormolu gilt mounted fittings; beautiful patina, beautiful parquetry; beautiful carrara marble tops, simply stunning!
About 10 years ago, I saw the ‘identical twin’ of the Commode in an Antique Store on Central Park in New York, however it had a less desirable green marble top (IMHO), and they were looking for 30k USD for the Commode, on its OWN!
This Suite/Set is SO GOOD that it is the main exhibit in our rear Showroom.
Not marked but under the marble top of the commode there are 2 signatures in pencil (1) M. Le Youters (?) and (2) M. Daneels.
You will NOT find another complete suite/set like this ANYWHERE!
AS A BONUS: We have curated and sourced (recently) a Pair of Monumental French Empire Wall Sconces which are a ‘PERFECT’ match for this bedroom set! (See pics)
These sconces are being sold separately BUT they really COMPLETE the entire bedroom!
The Suite/Set includes:
European King Size Bed (Headboard, Baseboard, side panels and central support bracket).
2 Matching Bedside...

Fine French Transition Louis XV XVI Style Chest Sideboard
Located in Forney, TX
A stunning, rare, and very fine quality French Transitional Louis XV - Louis XVI style mahogany inlaid marble-top chest after Jean-François Oeben / Jean-Henri Riesener.
Exquisitely hand-crafted in France, born in the late 19th / early 20th century, exceptionally executed Parisian work, retaining the original shaped marble top with contoured molded edge, over conforming solid mahogany case extensively inlaid with rich floral decoration and geometric trompe l'oeil marquetry-work. Embellished with finely sculpted and chisled gilt bronze ormolu mounts, the case fitted with three high quality locking bar mounted cabinet doors, each adorned with matched ornate escutcheon and opening thanks to the original keys, revealing a mahogany finished interior with single shelf. Featuring rare and exotic woods inlaid, all rising on bronze mounted transitional cabriole legs, ending in the finest quality patinated bronze sabots.
Its three doors do not interfere with its delicate marquetry with decorations of geometric cubes and beautiful flowers on gilt gold ground, its two flat uprights with cut sides inviting finesse and harmony, while its bronzes, with antique motifs indicate the return to refined classic taste.
A fine example of the Transition style, this chest subtly combines Louis XV marquetry with shapes that are already more rectilinear. From the middle of the 18th century, certain French artists, at the head of which the architects Blondel and Contant d'Ivry as well as the painter Louis-Joseph Le Lorrain, rose up against the excesses of the rococo style and advocated a calming of lines by the use of classical or even ancient principles. If the "Greek" style was too categorical a response to these requests, the Transition style, soon launched by the Marquis de Marigny, brother of Madame de Pompadour and Minister of the Arts, was much more measured and appreciated. Dutch cabinetmaker Matthijs Horrix was also front and center, a leader a Transition style.
Celebrated ebanista Jean-François Oeben was one of the leaders of this new taste, with Jean-Henri Riesener following in the 19th century. Oeben a genius with inlay, he gave birth to several patterns, both sober and elegant, such as the marquetry of bottomless cubes, which was adopted by many of his colleagues including Jacques Dautriche and Charles Chevallier.
Jean-François Oeben was particularly known for his "Louis XV or Transition furniture, adorned with leaf veneers, flower inlays or geometric patterns", according to Pierre Kjellberg (Le Mobilier français du XVIIIe, éditions de l'Amateur, 1989). A small secretary in the Transition cabinet...
