Korean Tansu Elmwood Chest with Iron Hardware, 20th Century
This elegant Korean Tansu Bandaji, more commonly known as a tallboy wedding chest or blanket chest, is constructed entirely of elmwood featuring ornate iron hardware, lock plates, and strapping.
These types of chests were historically very popular among aristocrats during Korea's Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910). They were commonly used as storage for documents, valuables, and clothing while blankets were laid out a top during the day. Hence why they're known as "Blanket Chests". The literal meaning of the Korean word bandaji is "half closing. This is because chests such as this one, have a front door that opens downward. Resulting in a "half open, half closed" chest. This bandaji also has beautiful detail work on the iron hardware.
