About the Item

George III 18th Century mahogany partners desk concealing twenty-four small drawers. In the manner of Thomas Chippendale. The original sectioned and tooled leather top sits above two short and three long quill/pen drawers to each side neatly concealed in the freeze above an intricate blind-fretwork of Chippendale design. The pedestals are raised on moulded plinths of architectural form with the original carrying handles to the sides. Faced with oak-lined graduating and cock-beaded drawers and similarly to the reverse. However, to the reverse, are superbly executed 'dummy' drawers, opening to reveal twenty-four small drawers, beautifully inset with letters of the alphabet and brass knobs. 'The Gentleman & Cabinet-Makers Director' By Thomas Chippendale. You will note the close resemblance to this desk and that from designs by Chippendale 'Library Table' No.LXXIX. There are so many things I love about this desk and even more so since deciding to bring it from the gallery to my home. The way it sits due to the fantastic dimensions and clever well thought out design. It truly has great features that have been introduced to add style whilst maintaining usability, an example of this can be seen in the frieze, which neatly conceals long pen drawers above a blind fretwork, a well-known detail of the Thomas Chippendale. This detail and not having large centre drawers, allow for a large amount of legroom in the kneehole, it also gives the desk a lighter feeling to the top which seem to further ground the desk. The articulated casters fixed below the pedestals allow for the whole desk to be easily moved around on a hard floor and again this has proved very useful but perhaps not something you would appreciate without living with the desk. Similarly, to the 'false' side which opens to reveal the twenty-four small drawers, 'false' pins have been inserted to the skeleton escutcheons to give the appearance on close inspection that they are locks behind but of course, there is only one lock to each pedestal to open the cupboards but again, rather than simply fix a regular lock to the edge of the door they have presumably had a special bespoke lock made which throws a bolt from the centre of the middle drawer, right across to the verticle structural rail! It should also be noted that the original tooled burgundy well-patinated leather could not be any nicer, it is just so atmospheric with all of the age-related marks you could possibly wish for, it tells a story. You can clearly see where a ledger has sat to the 'boss' side, with ink spills, few cigarette burns and varying colours all softly blended and attract. Provenance: Private UK collection.
