Dokter and Misses is a multi-disciplinary product design company founded by Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin in Johannesburg in 2007. Their innovative designs – including both limited-edition and production furniture, lighting and interior objects – have captured the attention of interior design enthusiasts across the world and defined an original aesthetic that is distinctly modern and African. Hugo’s and Taplin’s respective Industrial and graphic design skills combine to create work described as “modernist, where strong construction lines and a bold use of colour create graphic shapes and spaces.” Their editioned work has been shown at Design Days Dubai, Design Miami/ Basel, Design Miami/, The Salon Art and Design and Collective (both in New York), and as part of the Graphic Africa exhibition at Platform Gallery in London and Grains of Paradise at R & Company in New York. They have exhibited at major museums such as the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York and VITRA Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany and have been featured in Wallpaper*, Dwell and The New York Times. The couple won the Icon Award at the Southern Guild Design Foundation Awards 2015-2016, and participated in the ground-breaking programme Design Network Africa (2012-2014). This work is from their recent solo show at Southern Guild’s gallery in Cape Town, titled Practically Everywhere. The exhibition launched a new collection of limited-edition furniture inspired by the creative disorder and decay of urban ecosystems. In keeping with their strong graphic signature, the collection overwhelms the observer while exploring themes of over-saturation, disruption and unconscious actions and reactions. Largely consisting of sculptural cabinets in timber, steel and glass, this new body of work experiments with jagged shapes, odd proportions and stacked forms overlaid with textural surface treatments. Traditional structural configurations are turned inside out and decorated with dysfunctional clutter. Function is overtaken by clumps of irregular forms and negative spaces become a nest for 3D visual noise. Ever responsive to their local surroundings and Joburg’s inner city, the designers conceived of this collection as an abstracted study of their immediate environment which has adapted to and been overtaken by natural forces.

About The Maker

Southern Guild

View Profile
Southern Guild has spearheaded the high-end design category in Africa, propelling its artist-designers to make spirited, challenging and complex work. Its highly curated exhibitions have redefined global perceptions of African design and escalated its value on the international market. Since being founded in 2008 as the sole gallery representing locally made limited-edition design, Southern Guild has birthed a new category for artists and designers in South Africa. In 2011 it became the first African gallery to present at Design Miami, and in 2015 it was the first to be featured at Christie’s London’s annual design auction. The gallery shows regularly at Design Miami in Basel and the US, at Design Days Dubai and the Collective Design Fair in New York, resulting in sales to leading architects, top collectors and respected museums. It has had work from its collections included in Vitra Design Museum’s “Making Africa” exhibition and “Beauty–Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial” at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Against the backdrop of a design industry that is still fairly young, Southern Guild gives designers a platform to reimagine what is possible. Founders Trevyn and Julian McGowan are embedded in the South African cultural landscape and play integral roles in guiding, advising and mentoring designers.
