Spanish Cabinet "Bargueño" Walnut, Wrought Iron, Stone, 17th Century
About the Item
The rectangular locker rests on four round legs, and has four drawers decorated with diamonds that lock and fittings and shield shown horseshoe. Desk, hinged front cover has metal hooks (to attach the table without lock) and numerous decorative plates, plus a gorgeous close ornate with two rampant lions and stars. Opening the lid, which rests on two sureties ornate wooden locker with lion heads, drawers and doors decorated with square nets and architectural elements and columns are discovered. Answer a type called "Salamanca desk" which is the most representative of the Spanish Baroque. It was developed mainly along the seventeenth century and reached its employment and production, at least until the first quarter of the 18th century. Because, for lack of documentation, workshops responsible for these units are unknown and it is unknown if only in Salamanca would also be created or elsewhere, experts have proposed its designation as "desks columns" because this decorative element the most characteristic in the preserved examples. Another common feature in the Spanish 17th century desks are decorative and functional hardware that this piece shows. Stress the high quality of its work and, above all, the palastro partially gilded lions and stars, shells and architectural elements already mentioned. In all cases, and as often happens in this type, all metallic elements are highlighted with a background of fabric cut into polygonal shapes. The locker was a common fastener in these desks, allowing to extend the storage of important documents and other valuable properties inside drawers and doors closed and locked. Also known as "closed foot", an example of the first half of the 16th century, since when it stopped making not known. In this case, the decoration with diamonds is the most common examples of the 17th century, and that will be the set with the desktop, adds value to the work.
