Period 18th Century Decoratively Carved Swedish Commode

About the Item

Excellent example of the Swedish commode, the best carved elements enhance this piece. Beautiful fretwork and dental molding, carved rosettes at the top, lovely carved columns. Shaped drawers add dimension. All hardware is original bronze. The color of the piece is a very pale gray-blue, and the paint appears to have been enhanced in the past, but certainly some time ago. The carved rosettes have old red-brown color in the crevices, which may have been the base for gilding in the past, but we cannot know this. Each drawer was missing a small chunk where the lock was forced, again, long ago, and these have been filled in and painted to match. A new lock has been added to the top, slender, drawer, so the key can be used as a pull. This drawer has little jewelry compartments. In photographing this chest, it was difficult to get the actual pale color, however the image with the close-up of the keyhole does come close to the actual color, perhaps it is just a little more dense in color, to the blue side (please call the store to discuss further). The drawers close well considering the age of the burear, as is seen in the thumbnails. The chest is in two parts, top and bottom. This chest is very, very unique and special, it is a dramatic addition to a warm, lovely home.
