About the Item

The handcrafted Ziggurat cabinet/dry bar by Sum Furniture is a bold architectural statement piece, designed and made in England using traditional cabinetry techniques and exceptional natural materials. Sculptural and substantial in form, the design draws influence from early European Art Deco, Modernism, and the stepped geometry of ancient Mesopotamian architecture, resulting in a piece with striking presence from every angle. Constructed primarily from the finest quarter-sawn English oak, the cabinet showcases the remarkable depth, stability, and medullary figuring that make this timber so highly prized by fine furniture makers. Rich brown pippy oak door panels introduce further visual texture and individuality, while (optional) inlaid brass strip and joint pins provide a subtle contrast and refined decorative accent. For those seeking a quieter aesthetic, the brass detailing and pippy brown oak can be omitted entirely, allowing the uninterrupted beauty of the English white oak to take centre stage. The cabinet stands on thick shouldered oak legs terminating in stepped feet, reinforcing the architectural character of the design while creating dramatic shadow lines and layered forms throughout the piece. Inside, sizeable adjustable safety glass shelves provide versatility and practicality, making the cabinet equally suited as a dry bar, display cabinet, drinks cabinet, or general storage piece. The rear of the cabinet is traditionally panelled using the same carefully selected quarter-sawn oak, ensuring the piece remains visually impressive from all viewpoints and allowing it to sit comfortably within open-plan interiors. This particular version has been hand finished using durable Osmo oil, producing a highly durable surface with a soft natural lustre and a tactile, silk-like feel that enhances the richness and texture of the timber. A substantial and enduring piece of furniture, the Ziggurat cabinet is designed not only to make a visual impact, but to offer lasting quality and functionality for generations to come. Each cabinet is genuinely handcrafted in England by our highly skilled craftspeople and produced only in very small numbers, preserving the individuality, precision, and subtle character that only true handmade furniture possesses. Custom dimensions may be possible within practical parameters, and the design is also available in prime American black walnut. Other timber options may be available depending on sustainably sourced stock. At Sum Furniture, we create bold, alternative and highly distinctive furniture with a focus on combining unique contemporary design alongside the natural beauty and structural qualities of exceptional materials. Timber and material is carefully selected specifically for each design, considering visual impact, strength, texture, and longevity. By embracing these naturally occurring characteristics within sculptural contemporary forms, we continue to create tactile, idiosyncratic furniture with authenticity, presence, and enduring individuality.
