About Mobile di Cantù
The phenomenon of "Mobile di Cantù" is relatively recent, mid-nineteenth century, but thanks to happy concomitances and also a lot of foresight on the part of the administrators of the time, the well-deserved myth of the City of Furniture was born in a few decades. A fascinating story often ignored by his own protagonists investigated by Tiziano Casartelli, an architect with a taste for historical investigation, in his latest book "Cantù e il mobile. From classic taste to design », recently published by Canturium Editions. "This is the first study that deals entirely with the history of Cantù's main production sector - explains the author - One hundred and fifty years of history that have seen the progressive affirmation of the name of Cantù until its achievement, in the period between the 1920s and the sixties of the last century, of that primacy that would have projected the name of the city into the international sphere. The history of Italian design would not be the same if the protagonists of the industrial project had not been able to rely on the production centers where their ideas could be realized, verifying them with the help of artisans able to develop even the most complex project ". A know-how that still today is the basis of the fame of furniture made in Cantù which, in addition to being beautiful to look at, are designed to last over time.
"The attention to detail, the reliability and solidity of the products if we want a sort of ethical approach to doing business which, however, over the years has become a kind of trademark of the furniture produced in Cantù, built to last - continues the author - The decisive transition took place during the Sixties, thanks to important experiences such as those of the Selective (the city has come to have five, achieved thanks to the help of public bodies ed.) When contemporary taste has gradually reduced the use of furniture in style without penalizing too much the production in the city which had already changed pace ". This is also due to the teachings of the Art Institute which brought generations of craftsmen who later became entrepreneurs closer to the art of woodworking and design. It is no coincidence that masters of the caliber of Giò Ponti, Guglielmo Urlich, Franco Albini, Ico Parisi, Paolo Buffa, were at home here.
