18th Century American Mahogany Chippendale Chest, circa 1770

About

A stunning piece of early American furniture with excellent provenance, this secretary bookcase was designed and constructed by one of the best firms in 18th century Boston with is fine classical forms and proportions. Corkscrew finials, fluted pilasters, and delicate restrained proportion marks this as some of the best of Massachusetts designs. The high-crested swan-neck pediment is slightly separated and distinguishes it from other high chests of the period giving it a certain grace. The tombstone panels of the upper case door are surrounded by fantastic composite pilasters which are grouped in architecturally correct pairs of two rather than the more common and colloquial set of three. The interior of the desk is handsomely detailed with a tombstone panel prospect door flanked by half round Roman Doic pilasters surmounted by urn finials. Sets of drawers on either end of the desktop exhibit reverse block carving topped by carved scallop drawers. The lowers case contains four graduated drawers with original brasses. The case corners are contained by quarter fluted columns with carved acanthus garlands. The later bases which likely date to the early 20th century feature bold claw and ball feet and an acanthus and gadrooned apron. On the whole a remarkable piece of colonial American furniture for a discriminating collector. Boston, circa 1760-1780. Provenance: Charles Woolsey Lyon, Inc. New York, October 1928.
