About the Item

This understated but elegant bureau cabinet is composed of three sections decorated with colorful and contrasting marquetry throughout, depicting ornamental motifs using lemonwood and eucalyptus over mahogany. The upper section offers a drawer decorated with floral motifs. The middle section is the secretaire-abattant or fall-front secretary, which features a floral vase inlaid with different kinds of woods. The interior offers a leather writing surface with various open compartments and six small desk drawers decorated with inlaid geometrical designs. There are three long storage drawers that follow and form the lower part, Spain, circa 1800. A descendant of the French Bourbon Kings, Charles IV (b. 1748- d. 1820), was the sixth Bourbon King out of seven to reign in Spain. It was through this tie with the French royal court, that the Bourbon royal house, whose reign lasted 100 years, came to introduce the French taste in the decorative arts to the Spanish court, where it reached its maximum splendor during Charles IV's reign (1788-1808). Charles IV's love of art resulted in the hiring of the best cabinetmakers and court painters like Goya to produce furniture and for his different palaces: San Lorenzo del Escorial, El Pardo, Aranjuez Palace and the Madrid Royal Palace. Note: There is a similar marquetry secretary housed in the collection of the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid. 38 3/4" deep when writing surface is open. Why is this listed in good condition not excellent? Because it is an antique not a new piece of furniture. Condition and Wear as described by 1stdibs Excellent - Like new or has never been used. Absolutely no scratches or wear. Has no structural issues and is in perfect condition. Good - Very light scratches of minor wear to some areas of the piece. Most antique and vintage items fit this condition. No structural issues. This secretary is in very good to excellent condition for an antique for it has been restored and French polished. It will have minor surface imperfections consistent with its age and use.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Secretary has been restored and re-polished. Drawers show evidence of having had pulls and key plates. Brass knobs on interior drawers are not original. Locks and keys are original and are all in working condition.
