Late 19th Century Wall Secretary by Carlo Bugatti

About

Wall Secretary by designer Carlo Bugatti Wood and marquetry Late 19th century This wall secretary is the work of Carlo Bugatti, an Italian artist of the Art Nouveau movement who excelled in cabinet-making and goldsmithing. Composed of a circular mirror, it is framed by a brown wood with a geometric and vegetal decoration with metal inlays. The secretary's body is triangular in shape with a small workbench for writing bills and a small storage unit with a succession of drawers that can be used to place writing tools. The metal inlays represent stars with a dot in the centre. All the inlay work reflects Bugatti's high technicality and the Moorish influence he introduced into his orientalist furniture. This wall secretary refers to an oriental musical instrument. Bugatti was also a manufacturer of musical instruments, which explains this stylistic choice for this piece of furniture. Carlo Bugatti is an Italian artist born in 1856 in Milan and died in 1940 in Molsheim. He really began his career in Milan and then received acclaim in France, notably thanks to the silver medal he received at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and a grand prize from the jury for his play and conversation room at the first international exhibition of modern decorative art in 1902. He is also the father of Deanice Bugatti, Ettore Bugatti (1881-1947) founder of Bugatti. H x W x D: 90 x 70 x 24 cm
