Queen Anne English Burled Walnut Bureau, c. 1730

About the Item

This exquisite early 18th century bureau bookcase is finely crafted in the Queen Anne style with dramatic form and burled walnut veneered exterior inlaid with contrasting woods. Beneath a broken arched pediment with turned finial, two mirrored doors open to reveal a beautifully fitted interior containing six pigeon holes and nine small drawers. The slanted fall-back top of the secretaire base opens to another elegant interior of six drawers and six pigeon holes. The central door is decorated with a parquetry design of a tiled floor and archway, flanked by two pilasters containing secret compartments. The handles are gilt bronze as are the double eagle escutcheons with coronets. A show-stopping piece in any interior, this grand bureau is a fantastic example of Queen Anne furniture design. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
