Rhode Island Chippendale - Goddard School Secretary Bookcase

A cherrywood slant-front secretary on ogee bracket feet, with a complex blocked and fan carved interior, multiple drawers and pigeon holes, and a ledger recess. Two upper case panel doors enclose three fixed shelves. The lower case contains four graduated drawers, with later oversized brasses. John Goddard-Newport School, attributed to the shop of Daniel Spencer (1741-1801), a nephew of Goddard. Spencer had shops in Providence, Newport and Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The surface finish appears to be close to original. Handwritten ink inscription on the inside of the left uppercase door: "Peter Albertson to Alice U. Lane".
