This elegant piece of English cabinet making is a nineteenth century copy of an eighteenth century original designed by Thomas Sheraton. In 1791 he published the first of four volumes entitled "The Cabinet Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing Book" filled with new designs reflecting the desire for elegance and restraint when furnishing late eighteenth century interiors. The clean lines of this sideboard were paired with an emphasis on beautiful timbers that created a modern sensibility that remains potent in the twenty-first century. Please look at the facade of this sideboard to see that it follows the bow front shape of the top with the same straight line across the centre front with the two sides that fold smoothly away and reach toward the back. The front and sides of the top edge each feature a horizontal line of five raised ridges that give a unique impression of light and dark as light plays along the surface. This line is in contrast with the smoothness of the top, the facade and the sides where the large panels of mahogany are on display. The top extends wider and deeper than the body of the sideboard and this allows the visual line to taper from top to bottom along the profile of the entire piece as an echo of the tapered profile of each of the six legs. The centre section contains two drawers with the top drawer easily identified as such by the pair of circular brass drawer pulls and the raised beaded edge around its entire perimetre. The drawer beneath has an unusual profile as it appears to be a flat front with a raised arch. By reaching underneath and pulling forward this drawer may be opened and closed easily. The two vertical sections that flank the drawers have a fluted pattern of decoration and this fluted pattern is seen again on the left and right front vertical section that enclose the entire piece. Flanking the centre is a large cabinet on both the left and the right that are each slightly recessed and follow the same bow front profile as the top. Each door is set with the same circular brass pull as the drawers along with a small brass escutcheon set near the top of each cabinet door. The escutcheon is a guide for the key when it is used to engage the lock and also protects the beautiful timber from being marred by the metal key. Please take a moment to look at the marvelous flame grain mahogany that was chosen to sheathe the facade of this sideboard. The organic movement of the grain mimics the sky and sea with the variation in depth of color. This naturally occurring movement is in direct contrast with the geometric lines of the carved details and the profile of the six legs and creates a high level of visual interest.
