Brittany Oak Sideboard, circa 1890

About the Item

A sideboard in the Brittany style, made in oakwood. This piece of furniture is composed of two segments: a bottom, and an upper part. The bottom is in the chest form, supported on balusters, which are situated on a cornice that ends with a molding. The upper part is in the form of a setting supported by the figures of females, and is crowned with a cornice with a crest and finials. The door and setting panels are ornamented with semi-plastic carvings. Whereas, the side panels of the closet are decorated with a relief ornamentation. Moreover, noteworthy are full-plastic carvings of female figures, and openwork cutouts in the door panels. The drawers are decorated with striking brass fittings. The sideboard is in very good condition. It has undergone only some cosmetic renovation. This type of furniture was a luxurious addition, and had a representative character, as demonstrated by numerous ornamentations. If well-preserved, such decorations are a true rarity. Presented sideboard is such an example.

The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to its very ornate carvings. Historically, the local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif in the Brittany Style of antique furniture. Often antique furniture in the Brittany Style was carved out of chestnut or oak, with a very dark finish. A hallmark feature of the Brittany Style of French Country Antique Furniture...
