Florence Knoll aluminium, metal and marble sideboard, Knoll International, 1960s

About the Item

Four-door sideboard in wood, metal, and brushed aluminum, with a marble top, produced by Knoll, designed by Florence Knoll, 1960s A long life, great masters, and well-deserved lasting success. The influence of Florence Knoll profoundly shaped interior design in the second half of the 20th century. Through the Knoll brand, together with her husband, she revolutionized office and workplace furnishings by introducing modern, refined furniture that also paid close attention to aesthetic needs. Knoll’s designs reflect a distinctively American tradition in furniture and production, while also incorporating a taste shaped by a more European approach to aesthetics and decoration. During her education, Florence Knoll met Le Corbusier, and Alvar Aalto, and collaborated with Marcel Breuer. The brand's production mirrors these influences, as seen in this sideboard designed in the 1960s. The piece features a perfectly linear, geometric structure with well-balanced proportions and is equipped with four doors. A finely carved recess serves as a handle for opening the doors. The legs are crafted from chromed metal, while a slab of natural stone rests elegantly on the upper surface of the unit. Knoll, always attentive to adding a human touch to even the most rational and functional designs, entrusted the rich veining of green marble to bring warmth to the aesthetic of the piece. This sideboard, renowned for its design, is exceptionally rare in this particular combination of materials. The brushed aluminum finish on the doors is both unusual and precious. The visual appeal and appreciation of this piece remain unchanged nearly fifty years after its creation—a testament to the exceptional legacy of Florence Knoll and her unique vision of design.
