A French Art Deco Sideboard with Beveled Front and Three Drawers

About the Item

This is an exceptionally simple late Art Deco sideboard from France, c. 1940's. The piece features a sharply angled and deeply beveled front and base, with the walnut wood grain running vertically, like parquetry, in small sections. The doors are large and broad, with the grain running horizontally to accentuate the piece's length. In the center are 3 stacked drawers with simple, solid brass handles. The doors open to two large storage areas divided horizontally by a shelf in the center. The doors are lockable by solid brass keys, which are very heavy, solid, and decorative enough to leave in. The walnut veneers quietly dramatize, cascading and stepping across door fronts and edges. The condition of the piece is excellent, considering its age, with only minor losses to the corners of some veneer sections. Instead of replacing the veneers (and not matching them), the restorers have opted to smooth them out and fill losses with lacquer. The surface has a buffed appearance, without excessive gloss. The piece has an almost mid-century modern appearance and blends easily with contemporary interior design.
